Hackers continue to hit homeworkers in record attack surge

Cyber criminals attacked businesses worldwide whopping 22m times in the last seven days, latest study by Atlas VPN finds.

Hackers attacked businesses around the world more than 22m times during the last week, with more than 63% of these involving malware attacks. On average 3.26m cyber attacks occurred daily throughout the seven days, according to data compiled and analysed by Atlas VPN. Malicious agents carried most cyber attacks on Wednesday 15 April, with a more than 3.6m intrusion attempts mounted. Malware attacks comprised 63% of the total attacks.

“Due to the increased internet usage and increasing numbers of people working from home because of the Coronavirus pandemic, 2020 could well be a record year for both hacker attacks and the number of records breached,” says Rachel Welsh, COO at Atlas VPN. “We now estimate that hackers could be attacking commercial organisations 20m times per day globally, and we expect that breaches will exceed the 8bn record figure that we saw in 2019.”

The study found that phishing scams are the least common type of attacks directed by hackers, with in excess of 15m attacks within the same time-frame. This accounts for over 15% of the total volume of attacks, Atlas VPN adds.
